Lydia Violet is a gypsy-heritage violinist and passionate singer/songwriter, who has just released her debut album of new music, "Already Free." available on iTunes, Bandcamp, Soundcloud, and Spotify

As featured on Democracy Now! w/ Amy Goodman

Lydia Violet is an accomplished multi-instrumentalist who is deeply inspired by folk, blues, and protest music traditions. In her solo project she combines fiddle, banjo, and her soulful voice to offer a soul-folk revival experience. She also plays with singer/songwriter Ayla Nereo and Brooklyn based spoken word group Climbing PoeTree. She uses her stunning violin sounds and soulful voice to bring her listeners into deep communion with the beauty of our world. Lydia’s musical inspiration arises from her experience in ecological and social justice activism, participating in the great work of restoring peace and dignity to our world. In the past year she has collaborated with Rising Appalachia, Climbing PoeTree, Ayla Nereo, MaMuse, Joanna Macy, and been featured on Democary Now! w/ Amy Goodman. From electronic funk and Louisiana gospel to old-fashioned blues and classical, Lydia delights in sharing the medicinal power of music.

"Being on the road has an inherent quality of song. It feels so natural to sing as you walk, in wanderlust, lustful, full-throated, belting out melodies at the hills. Sing up the sun. In your walking you sing your path. Nomadism’s rhythm is the sun. Nomadism’s melody is the songline. On the leaning way, the slanting way, the canting way, music echoes the lilt of the land. The singer is chanting, canting the descant part, till the way is steeped in song, en-chanted, sung, the singer chants the way and walks the song, and the way and the song and the singer are one." - Jay Griffiths

Lydia Violet feat. at Candlelight Club

East Bay Community Space, 507 55th Street, Oakland, CA 94609

Candlelight Club is a new monthly tradition, where we gather some of the most compelling personalities from Oakland, Berkeley and San Francisco together to break bread, have a glass of wine, and explore riveting live performances together.

The formula is simple: drinks at 7:30pm, dinner at 8:00pm, and the performance at 9:00pm.

The Candlelight Club ("CC") is a by-invite potluck dinner event for "artist-centric" (not "audience-centric") performance, around sometimes challenging, controversial or enlightening (and often thrilling) themes. CC is also an affordable date, a sit down dinner with new and old friends, in a sexy, fun, engaging atmosphere. The crowd is eclectic, extremely warm and generous, and passionately curious. Everyone either brings a dish or a drink, or both--and shares what they're bringing on the Facebook Event Page (muy importante for the planners!). It's a co-created, non-profit (but we pay musicians and performers because we believe in what they're sharing) community event. We limit participation to the 100 who sign up first because we're committed to an intimate, conversational atmosphere. Friends of The Candlelight Club may request additional invites from the organizers (Kevin and Luke), but we ask that you inquire before inviting others. Thank you!

Theme Performance: Active Hope: How to Face the Mess We're In Without Going Crazy

Our world is in the midst of great political, ecological, and social crises, where the future of 95% of earth’s current inhabitants hangs from the frailest of threads. It is in times like this that we can access depths of our profound care and energy for helping turn the tides towards healing and survival. It is also easy to access feelings of despair, overwhelm, and anxiety as we witness great powers abusing our most sensitive communities. In our culture, our inner pain can be interpreted as a sign of weakness, so we hide our doubts and despairs for fear of appearing weak or not receiving the support we need. This pain is not a weakness, but a sign that the we still care deeply about what happens to each other and our planet, a care that is the binding force of life that will pull us back to each other as we move forward in more socially conscious and sustainable ways.

Music As Medicine Full Program

 —  —

Green Valley Farm & Mill, 13024 Green Valley Road, Sebastopoo, CA 95472

Lydia Violet & Temra Costa of Green Valley Farm & Mill are delighted to be collaborating to bring you a full "Music As Medicine In Our Time" program, including a day-long workshop and evening concert with the Lydia Violet full band!

In this workshop Lydia will lead us through an intimate experience with the Work That Reconnects (WTR), a dynamic, interactive body of work developed by Joanna Macy, a scholar and respected elder in systems theory, deep ecology, and Buddhism as well as 50+ years of international activism. Together we'll learn tools, meditations, and concepts that we can rest into and organize with, in our desires to be effective allies to both planet and people. In a time of such heightened crisis, we will experience this work which has helped thousands of people address unacknowledged pain for the world, contact inner resilience, and deepen a sense of belonging in the web of life.

Singing in a council of friends is also one of the most healthful, encouraging, invigorating, and nourishing things that we know. Hearts opened by grief and celebration want to sing their songs of longing, despair, belonging, reckoning, valiant warrior-ship, and gentle loving kindness. It's our birthright (and a deep need of today's world) to engage in this culture-creation together. We will spend time exploring circle song, international folk, and protest music traditions. This workshop is open and friendly to music-makers of all levels!

There will be a workshop and concert as part of this full program. Participants are welcome to sign up for either, or for both.

The workshop will be held from 10am-5pm on Saturday, October 28th for a sliding scale registration fee of $30-60.

The revival-concert celebration will be held at 7:30pm that evening for a fee of $10-20.

For any questions feel free to contact the organizer through Eventbrite or email Lydia at lydiavioletsounds@gmail.com

There will also be an optional community potluck in between programs hosted at Green Valley Farm & Mill! Venue website is www.gvfam.com
